Family Resources on What is Self-Awareness?

Project and Purpose

In class students learned the definition of self-awareness. Students participated in an activity called “My Top Five!” where they brainstormed 5 things about themselves and then they drew a self-portrait to demonstrate what they discovered.

Self-Awareness is one of the five major competencies, or building blocks, of social emotional learning. While being self-aware may seem like something that is too complicated for young children, there are many valuable things children can begin to learn about themselves at a young age; strengths, interests, and how to persevere in tasks (especially tasks that are uninteresting) all are important things to learn at a young age. This lesson introduces building the competency of self-awareness by focusing on interests and goals.

Conversation Starters and Practice at Home Activities

Tell me about the “My Top Five” game. What did you find new or interesting? (If available) have your child share the hand drawing they did in class.

Discuss the following questions:

  • What kinds of talents do you have? What are some goals you have?
  • Describe your self-portrait. Why did you draw what you did?

School to Home Resources on Self Awareness

In this lesson students will define and explore Self-Awareness. Through art and play, students will learn how Self-Awareness allows one to recognize their own feelings and thoughts.

Format

This 25–35 minute lesson is designed for flexibility. It can be taught in one day or over the course of a week.
