Family Resources on Identity Who am I?

Project and Purpose

By explicitly teaching social-emotional learning skills while honoring diverse identities, creating a sense of belonging, and promoting student agency toward personal growth and social impact, the teacher better creates a classroom environment that fosters well-being for self and others.

Materials Needed

A Die! As a class, roll the die and call on a student to finish the statement that corresponds to the number .  Allow the other students to give a thumbs up or the “me too” hand sign to show that they share that aspect of their identity. Continue play until every student has rolled and finished a statement.  Remind students to avoid negative descriptions of themselves!  Set any guidelines or ground rules needed based on your knowledge of your class.

If the lesson is used in the classroom: The goal of this lesson was to help students learn about their strengths and how to apply those strengths to new learning situations.

The teacher led students in a discussion about their personal identity using a dice game. Students used their dice game activity to write six statements about their individual identities.

Getting Ready for the Conversation

Learning about oneself is important to understanding strengths and opportunities for learning new things. Helping students identify and understand their strengths helps children become better regulated and hopeful.

Conversation Starters and Practice at Home Activities

Have your child share their statements from the dice game about their identities. Ask your child to explain each of the statements they wrote and discuss how they can apply these characteristics to other things that are important for your family and community.

School to Home Resources on Identity - Who am I?

In this lesson students will define and explore the concept of identity. Through play and art, students will think and share the various characteristics that make them who they are.

Format

This 25–35 minute lesson is designed for flexibility. It can be taught in one day or over the course of a week.
