If this lesson was used in the classroom: Students learned about growing emotionally and how to interact with others as they mature. In class students discussed how to make responsible decisions. In small groups students discussed difficult situations and how to learn from difficult events that happen in life.
Getting Ready for the Conversation
The video for this module features Moyagabi who has dealt with a variety of problems including being racially profiled and his father being incarcerated. Moyagabi tells how he has grown despite these issues and is excited about his dreams for the future.

Not doing great in school
Moyagabi says, “My dad called once and he asked me, how I am doing in school…I took time to answer it, ‘I’m not doing great in school’”. Moyagabi gives an explanation of this. Describe why you think this would be such a difficult event for Moyagabi?
I have to help
Moyagabi says, “If I want to help my parents out of this, I have to pick myself up now”. Why do you think Moyagabi made this decision? What other alternatives did he have?
Different now
Moyagabi says, “I’m different now than I was three years ago”. Describe what you think it takes for someone to make positive decisions despite a negative life event.
An opportunity
Moyagabi says, “If I never went to this school, then I wouldn’t have got this opportunity”. We do not know what Moyagabi’s school offers. If you were in Moyagabi’s place, what kinds of support do you think you would need? Describe why.
